The Municipal Council of Vila Nova de Cerveira has just announced that “the digital highway of the future is now a reality, reaching practically all homes, companies, and businesses in the municipality of Vila Nova de Cerveira,” and that “the fiber-optic network installed in the municipality has achieved a coverage rate of 98%.”
The local authority explained that, “in an initial phase, between 2016 and 2017, the Municipal Council moved forward with the installation of a fiber-optic network in business reception areas, with an investment of €106,000, enabling all companies located in Industrial Parks I and II to be connected at points of presence of all telecommunications operators, thus benefiting from improved information technology conditions.”
“To complement the investment made several years ago in the riverside parishes, the fiber-optic network installation project was extended mainly to inland parishes, in line with the principles of universality and accessibility to essential infrastructure.”
The installation of the fiber-optic network “was completed at the end of 2020, in a process involving several entities, such as Parish Councils and Private Social Solidarity Institutions (IPSS), as well as a comprehensive survey of population needs. This allowed access to a neutral network available to all operators, with a total investment of €165,000 supported by the municipality.”
The Mayor of Vila Nova de Cerveira further emphasizes that this is “an investment that is not physically visible, but whose impact will be clearly felt digitally, as people will notice major improvements in efficiency and effectiveness in their daily routines, since new communication pathways are increasingly essential.”
Fernando Nogueira states that “the expansion and operationalization of the fiber-optic network represents a fundamental step toward the performance and success of the business sector and the increased competitiveness of the territory, offering residents a wider range of access to next-generation television, telephone, and internet services.”
Among the advantages of the fiber-optic network, the municipality highlights “greater transmission capacity, in terms of speed and connection stability, including 1Gb internet connections, avoiding slow page loading or downloads, as well as poor quality and noise during videoconferences—now increasingly necessary in daily life due to business needs and the growing prevalence of remote work and distance learning.”
