We spoke with our engineering team to identify the key technical characteristics of fiber optics.

In simple terms, fiber optics consist of thin, flexible strands made of highly transparent glass or plastic, whose main purpose is data transmission. This is achieved through light-beam communications, where light propagates inside the fiber’s core using advanced modulation techniques.

Optical fibers are composed of a transparent core with a high refractive index, surrounded by transparent plastic layers with a lower refractive index than the core. This structure ensures that light remains confined within the core during propagation, allowing transmission over long distances with very low signal loss.

Due to its transmission quality, cost-effectiveness, durability, robustness, and scalability, fiber optics remain, to this day, the best transmission medium for communications networks.
