dstelecom Reduces Energy Consumption by 20% in Telecommunications Facilities

dstelecom reduz em 20% o consumo energético nas centrais de telecomunicações

By the end of 2020, dstelecom’s telecommunications facilities in 36 municipalities will be powered by photovoltaic solar panels, resulting in an estimated 20% reduction in energy consumption.

By the end of 2020, dstelecom’s telecommunications facilities in 36 municipalities will be powered by photovoltaic solar panels, resulting in an estimated 20% reduction in energy consumption.

With a total installed capacity of approximately 215.34 kW, this initiative will lead to a reduction of around 167 tons of CO₂ emissions per year, equivalent to the carbon absorption of 1,086 trees.

Indirectly, the shade provided by the photovoltaic structures also helps reduce the high thermal load on the telecommunications equipment serving local populations, thereby increasing the resilience of both the infrastructure and the services provided.

At present, solar panels have already been installed in Castro Marim, Cinfães, Salvaterra de Magos, and Vila Nova de Cerveira. By the end of the year, installations will be completed in Aljezur, Alcoutim, Aljustrel, Alandroal, Avis, Arouca, Alijó, Almodôvar, Baião, Celorico de Basto, Crato, Chamusca, Macedo de Cavaleiros, Mogadouro, Moura, Mourão, Mora, Mértola, Moimenta da Beira, Miranda do Douro, Monção, Ponte de Sôr, Penedono, Paredes de Coura, Resende, Sousel, Serpa, Viana do Alentejo, Torre de Moncorvo, Vila Viçosa, Valpaços, and Vinhais.

As dstelecom continues to expand its telecommunications footprint and customer base, energy consumption naturally increases. In response, the company has implemented additional measures aimed at reducing overall energy usage.

These include the adoption of free cooling systems in air-conditioning units—taking advantage of low ambient temperatures to cool telecommunications facilities—as well as energy-efficient operating modes in network equipment that place unnecessary functionalities and hardware into standby. In addition, real-time monitoring of energy consumption patterns allows for the identification of abnormal deviations.

With its eyes firmly set on the future, dstelecom remains mindful of its responsibility as a company to protect the environment. Through these measures, it demonstrates a strong commitment to building an increasingly sustainable path forward.
