Solidarity: shall we connect generations?

Solidariedade: vamos conectar gerações?

The COVID-19 pandemic caught us all by surprise. As a company, from the very first moment, we understood the crucial role we had to play in society at a time when the world was turned upside down.

Telecommunications could not stop. Families and friends needed to stay connected after replacing hugs with video calls. Healthcare and education had to continue—at a distance.

From the outset, we reinforced our mission to reduce regional asymmetries by connecting communities through the digital world. More than 300 employees remained on the ground, in the midst of the pandemic, ensuring that telecommunications services reached people. It was imperative to help using what we do best: creating connections.

One example of this commitment was the solidarity project “Connecting Generations.” Aware that the elderly population represented—and still represents—a high-risk group, we launched this initiative to connect care homes across Portugal to the world through fiber-optic technology.

Arcos de Valdevez, Melgaço, and Paredes de Coura were the three municipalities that joined this solidarity project, which aimed to reduce loneliness in care homes at a time when in-person visits were prohibited.

The Municipal Council of Melgaço, through its social media channels, highlighted this initiative and emphasized the importance of this “reinforcement of telecommunications services for the municipality.”

With full hearts, we can say that in just over two weeks, elderly residents in care homes across these three municipalities in Minho were able to reconnect with their families through next-generation networks.
