The Proef-dstelecom/IB-S Chair is promoted by the Proef group (www.proefgroup.com) and dstelecom (www.dstelecom.pt) and the Institute for Science and Innovation for Bio-Sustainability (IB-S), and will be based at the University of Minho, in Guimarães. The IB-S (ib-s.uminho.pt) is a infrastructure of the University of Minho, involving a partnership with several companies, with the goal of promoting sustainable development and competitiveness through multidisciplinary solutions that guarantee a balance between ecosystems and the built environment.

This Chair is open to qualified and motivated candidates capable of leading and implementing an ambitious research plan within the subject “Sustainable telecommunication networks for the digital society of the future”. The Chair holder should lead applied research in strict collaboration with the promoting companies, promote research projects and secure financing to support the planned research work.

Candidates should have advanced skills and competencies in, at least, one of the following topics:

• Sustainable Development of Telecommunication Networks (Low Population Density Areas and Urban and Industrial Areas)
• Optimized Planning and Design of FTTx Networks
• Planning and Implementation of New Sustainable Business Models Associated with 5G Mobile Networks
• Improvement of Telecommunication, Energy and Mobility Networks Monitoring Systems
• Neutral Hosting
• Smart-Cities and Internet of Things (IOT)

The candidates should present the following elements as part of their application:

• A cover and motivation letter
• Detailed résumé
• Short résumé (maximum of 2 pages)
• Proposed Plan of Action (double spaced document with a maximum of 5 pages, including a brief description, methodology, expected results, schedule, and expected contribution to the Chair objectives).

The short-listed candidates will be interviewed by a committee involving Proef, dstelecom and IB-S.

Proposed Action Plan:

The Action Plan should be prepared taking into account the following objectives, to be achieved in a period of 4 years:

• Development of a research dynamic relevant to the Chair topics, with visibility and impact at national and international level;
• Leadership and establishment of a highly qualified, motivated, multidisciplinary and competent research team to pursue the scientific and technological objectives of the Chair;
• Creation of the necessary conditions for financial self-sustainability of the team and the Chair itself;
• Implementation of processes for innovation and valorisation of the developed scientific knowledge with technology transfer for the industrial settings with patent development and added value products;
• Establishment of cooperation relationships with the business and industrial sectors.

The following pre-requisites will be positively evaluated:

• Hold a PhD in Electronic, Communications, Networks Engineering or similar field for a minimum of 5 years (mandatory);
• Relevant scientific material production, which includes research project management;
• Hold previous, relevant, working links with the industrial and business sectors, be it as a technical job in innovative companies, as experience in research and/or innovation departments, or as leading management jobs;
• Training experience demonstrated by lectures or workshops, coordination of teaching courses in higher education institutions, or coordination of training courses;
• Demonstrate creativity, good English skills, proactive attitude, and leadership qualities.

Duration:

The Chair duration is planned for 4 years, with annual evaluation of the established plans objectives completion. These conditions can be adjusted per the availability of the selected candidate.

Salary and conditions:

The salary will be in agreement with candidate’s résumé and can be equivalent to an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor in accordance with the established salary scales in Portugal. The position can be held as full-time (preferred) or part-time.

The Chair includes funding for supporting the Action Plan, in terms of laboratory access, consumables and human resources for research.
