Impact of optical fiber on teleworking

By Jorge Nóbrega, IT specialist at ARS Norte

Teleworking is increasingly a reality. With the COVID-19 pandemic, companies had to adapt – and healthcare organizations were no exception.

The person who talks to us about this is Jorge Nóbrega, a computer scientist from Cumieira, Santa Marta de Penaguião, who, for the first time in 30 years of profession, started working from home, to ensure that the platforms did not fail doctors or users of the geographic area for which he is responsible.

“In the health sector, almost permanent contact with the units that provide care to the population is very important. Being able to help them perform IT tasks and provide full assistance to critical information systems for populations during the COVID-19 pandemic was exceptional. Without fiber it would be impossible”, he tells us.

From Jorge's perspective, if this period brought several challenges to the world of work, fiber offered the necessary answers and tailored solutions:

“Often, during my work, I need to use video conferencing. Fiber allows this to happen naturally. It's as if the person I'm talking to is in the compartment next to me. Therefore, there is no delay that occurred before, in the voice, in the image that was frozen”.

The speed and file transmission capacity also proved to be an added value for Jorge, since he joined the fiber service:

“A very, very important advantage is the fact that it allows us to transfer extremely large files which, before the fiber service, was practically impossible. With fiber, all this has changed and sometimes it’s just a matter of seconds.”

Furthermore, unlike other connectivity services, optical fiber allow several devices to be connected to the internet simultaneously, without loss of quality.

“Another advantage of fiber is the possibility of, for example, me, my wife and my son being at home, the three of us using a computer, for example, having one or two televisions on at the same time, and all this without interfering. in the quality of service”, he reflects.

But, above all, what the digital highway brought to Jorge's life was quality of life:

“You save a lot on travel. Essentially, you save time. In addition, we also have the family and social aspect, of being much closer to those we like and love.

The simple fact of being able to be working and, during my break, being able to go to the garden for a coffee, get some fresh air, play with the animals and listen to the birds is totally different, without a doubt.”
