Optical fibre dominates the subscription-TV market in Portugal

Optical fibre continues to assert itself as the technology of choice for the Portuguese to access subscription television services. According to the latest data released by ANACOM for the first quarter of 2025, fibre (FTTH/B) now accounts for 67.4% of all subscribers to this type of service in Portugal.

This growth confirms consumers' preference for connectivity solutions that combine reliability, speed and quality: three essential pillars for a modern television experience, adapted to today's demands.

Cable and satellite continue to lose market share

The strengthening position of fibre optics demonstrates a trend that has been intensifying over the last few years. As the national network modernises and becomes more accessible, the Portuguese continue to abandon older technologies such as cable, satellite and ADSL.

Currently, cable television remains the second most common option, with a share of 25%, followed by satellite television (DTH), which accounts for 6.3% of total access. ADSL, a technology in decline, is practically residual, with just 1.3% of the market share.

This scenario reflects not only a change in the technological paradigm, but also an evolution in the profile of the consumer, who is increasingly demanding in terms of the quality and stability of the service.

A sector in continuous growth

ANACOM's data also reveals that the total number of subscription television subscribers in Portugal reached 4.7 million at the end of March 2025. This figure represents an increase of around 53,000 customers compared to the same period in 2024, reflecting a trend of continued growth.

The vast majority of these customers, 88.5 per cent, are residential, which demonstrates the strong take-up by Portuguese families.

A network that matches new habits

In a context where streaming, video calls, online gaming and remote working are increasingly common, the demand for robust, high-performance connections has never been higher. The answer lies in next-generation networks, and that's precisely what fibre offers: speed, reliability and scalability.
